My business story began soon after I graduated from college. After three years as a teacher, I resigned on the day I was given tenure and started my first company. It wasn’t a wild success, but it was a learning machine for me, and man did I learn, often the hard way, but I also went to every business seminar, read every business book I could find, and often went to events to listen to and meet the author, entrepreneur or business owner. 

 

I was on a bus or train to New York City to business events on a very regular basis, and even going back to school to study business, strategy, and innovation, and enjoying every minute of the wild business ride I was on. 

 

My list of mentors was long and deep, Matt Lambert of McDonald’s, Founder Ray Kroc's right-hand man, entrepreneur extraordinare Dave McDougal, the wise Jim Rohn, the brilliant Felda Hardimon at Harvard Business School, and incredibly insightful and kind Arnaldo Hax at MIT Sloan School of Business, and the list goes on and on, they and so many others were my coaches in life and business.

 

My companies began to be much more successful, and along the way, I was asked to do Sales Training for Coca Cola, and also to help other companies, along with running my own. I was asked to ride the ferries to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, helping them improve and teaching their employees how to provide better customer service in seminars. I was being asked to be a keynote speaker at events and associations.

Because I was speaking and helping so many other businesses as a coach, as well as going back to school, I was forced to systematize and organize my companies so that they didn’t revolve around me.

 

That’s when I began the Creation of my Powerful Money Making Machine System. I was amazed that my businesses worked so well when I was not there. My System provided a powerful framework where my entire team knew what to do and how to do it, and I was free to strategize, innovate, and evaluate everything with Energy, Positivity, and Clarity.

 

I no longer worked IN my Business. I was THE LEADER of my Business.

Sales and profits began to explode, and my Business was Exciting, satisfying, and fun for myself and my amazing team!

 

I had learned that owning a business didn’t have to be a slow, painful slog with meager returns.

I had discovered that when you and your team know what to do, and how to do it, when you create systematized, organized Money Making Machine companies that don’t require you to be there on a day to day basis, that owning a business is an exciting, fun, exhilarating adventure with incredible rewards not only financially but also in terms of freedom, life, love, family and happiness!

 

I owned businesses; they didn’t own me. I had time for family, friends, and fun, along with rarely missing one of my son's sports games; as a matter of fact, I coached most of them!

 

I sold my fifth company just before COVID began. The due diligence executive team had spent several days in my company going through everything. They examined business records, talked with my amazing team…they looked under the hood at everything and found a sparkling, smooth-running engine, a Money Making Machine!

 

My favorite moment was when they sat in my office and after saying how impressed they were, one executive asked the greatest question I have ever been asked, 

 

“We have one question, we understand what Carol does in accounting, we understand what Sandy does as head of sales, we understand what Leslie does in operations, we understand what everyone does here…but what do you do?”

 

I paused and took a long, delicious breath of deep satisfaction before answering.

 

“I don’t have a job here; I run the company.”

 

The three executives all looked at each other, and then the leader looked at me after a brief pause and said,

 

“Well, I guess that’s why we’re buying your company.” 

 

Along my exciting and fulfilling business journey, I have learned that businesses will trip over themselves to buy a precision-run, systematized, Money-Making Machine business that doesn’t depend on the owner being there.

 

I also learned that, along with making a fortune leading your business and then selling it for a second fortune, there is a third Bonus Fortune, which is the MOST IMPORTANT FORTUNE OF ALL!!!

I was able to do all those things, including spending an amazing amount of time with my sons and coaching them in baseball, soccer, and basketball…and life.

 

When I sold my last company there was quite a crowd at the signing of executives, lawyers and accountants and a photographer and it’s hard to describe the feeling joy and satisfaction when you sign all those documents, but the greatest feeling for me was driving to the bank afterwards to look at my account now bursting with a seven figure transfer of money from the sale. 

 

I remember sitting in my car, looking at my bank balance with tears in my eyes, thinking of my wonderful and brilliant dad and what he could have done with a coach in his life. What happened to him shouldn’t happen to anyone.
